Junk Removal in Seminole County, FL: Landfill vs. Transfer Station, Bulk Pickup, and When to Hire Help

If you live in Sanford, Lake Mary, Longwood, Oviedo, or anywhere else in Seminole County, getting rid of an old couch or a garage full of junk comes down to two questions: who picks up your trash, and which county drop-off site will actually take what you have. Cypress Haul Away hauls junk all over Seminole County, and this guide covers what we've learned, including one drop-off mistake you don't want to make with a loaded truck.

Which Seminole County Drop-Off Site Takes Bulky Junk?

The Seminole County Landfill in Geneva is the one that takes furniture, appliances, and other large items. The Central Transfer Station in Longwood does not. Seminole County runs both sites, and they take very different things (Seminole County Solid Waste locations):

  • Seminole County Landfill: 1930 E. Osceola Rd, Geneva, FL 32732. Open 7 days a week, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Takes appliances, large items, scrap metal, tires, used motor oil and filters, car batteries, propane tanks, and fire extinguishers.
  • Central Transfer Station: 1950 State Road 419, Longwood, FL 32750. Open Monday to Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Takes household garbage, yard waste, recycling, cardboard, household hazardous waste, and up to 4 tires.

Why Did the Longwood Transfer Station Turn Me Away?

Because the Central Transfer Station doesn't accept furniture, appliances, construction and demolition debris, stumps and large branches, or dump trailers. The county sends all of that to the landfill in Geneva. We found this out firsthand: on a Longwood garage job, our loaded truck was turned away at the transfer station and had to head out to Geneva instead. If your load is mostly furniture, a mattress, or garage junk, skip Longwood and go straight to the landfill.

What Does It Cost to Use the Seminole County Landfill?

Loads are weighed and charged by the ton, with a minimum of $5.00 per transaction, and passenger and light truck tires are $3.16 each (Seminole County disposal rates). A small load is often close to the minimum. The landfill takes cash and cards, but the county warns that card service is sometimes down, so bring a backup way to pay.

Where Does Paint, Electronics, and Other Hazardous Stuff Go?

To the Central Transfer Station in Longwood, not the landfill. The landfill does not take household hazardous waste like chemicals, electronics, or gasoline, while the transfer station does. Household hazardous waste should never go out with your regular curbside trash. Our pickup prep page lists the items haulers can't take either.

Does Seminole County Pick Up Large Items at the Curb?

It depends on where you live. Seminole County's own curbside service covers homes in unincorporated Seminole County, and the county says those residents get large item collection through its contracted providers (Seminole County Solid Waste Management). Call the Solid Waste Management Division at (407) 665-2260 before you put anything out, to confirm the item qualifies and get a pickup date. Items need to be at the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day.

If you live inside city limits, your city arranges your trash service, so check your city's website or call City Hall for its bulk item rules before dragging anything to the curb.

When Does Hiring a Hauler Make More Sense?

Hiring it out usually wins when the job is too big, too heavy, or too far from Geneva to be worth a trip. From Sanford it's a short drive, but from Altamonte Springs or Longwood it's a real trek, and you still have to load and unload it yourself. Common reasons people call us:

  • Furniture, mattresses, or appliances the transfer station won't take
  • No truck, or no way to get a heavy item into one
  • A full garage, shed, or storage unit that's more than one trip
  • Anything upstairs, in the back of the garage, or behind the house
  • A deadline: a closing, a lease end, a move-out, or company coming

Cypress Haul Away is locally owned, based in Apopka, and serves Sanford, Lake Mary, Longwood, Oviedo, Winter Springs, Casselberry, Altamonte Springs, and the rest of Seminole County. Pricing is flat and upfront: any single item is $165, two or more items are priced by adding up each item's price (never under $165), and full garages, storage units, and whole-house cleanouts get a free on-site estimate. We do all the lifting and loading, and the dump run is included in the price.
