Junk & Recycling Drop-Off Guide

Not every job needs a truck and a crew. Here's where Orange and Seminole County residents can take scrap metal, bulk junk, mattresses, batteries, and paint themselves. Hours and fees change, so call ahead before you load up the car.

Storm & Hurricane Debris

County-run, usually free

After a hurricane or major storm, both Orange and Seminole County typically run a temporary curbside debris collection program separate from regular trash pickup. It's usually free, but the schedule depends on the storm and can take weeks to reach your street.

Orange County, Emergency Debris Removal
Check orangecountyfl.net's Emergency Debris Removal page after a storm for the current collection schedule and sorting rules (vegetative debris, construction/demolition, and household items are usually picked up separately).
Seminole County, Hurricane & Debris
Check seminolecountyfl.gov's Hurricane and Debris page after a storm for the current collection schedule and sorting rules.

Don't want to wait on the county's schedule, or have debris the county program won't take? We can haul it away for you. See our hurricane season cleanup guide for more.

Mattresses

Donate first if it's clean

A mattress in decent shape is worth donating before it's worth dumping. It saves the tipping fee and gives your old bed a better outcome.

Mustard Seed of Central Florida
Furniture & clothing bank, Orlando area
Accepts clean, gently-used mattresses for donation. Check current intake rules before hauling one over.

Anything torn, stained, or bug-compromised just goes in with regular bulk debris at the landfill or transfer station above. Mattresses aren't accepted at either county's household hazardous waste sites.

Batteries

Usually free

Car batteries especially: auto parts stores take them for free (sometimes for store credit) and there are several within a few minutes of Apopka.

AutoZone / Advance Auto Parts / O'Reilly, Apopka locations
All three take lead-acid car batteries free of charge, no purchase required. O'Reilly also does free used motor oil and fluid recycling.
Batteries Plus
Takes the batteries auto parts stores won't: lithium-ion, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, specialty. Business accounts available for regular volume; a small fee may apply depending on chemistry.
Seminole County Landfill
Also accepts car batteries (limit 2), if you're already there dropping off a load.

Paint & Household Chemicals

Free for residents

Both counties offer free hazardous-waste drop-off for residents disposing of their own household paint and chemicals. Just bring ID and stay under the posted limits.

Orange County, Landfill & Porter Transfer Station
5901 Young Pine Rd, Orlando · 1326 Good Homes Rd, Orlando
Hours: Mon–Sat, 8am–5pm
Takes paint, batteries, pesticides, propane, car fluids, and electronics. Residents only, limit 25 gallons of paint/chemicals per vehicle.
Seminole County, Central Transfer Station
1950 State Rd 419, Longwood, FL 32750
Hours: Mon–Sat, 7:30am–5:30pm
Accepts household hazardous waste, free for Seminole County residents. Paint limit: four 5-gallon pails or twenty 1-gallon cans.
Quick tip: latex paint doesn't need a hazardous waste site once it's dried out. Crack the lid and let it air-dry, or stir in cat litter or paint hardener until it's solid. Once solid, it can go out with your regular household trash. Oil-based paint and anything still liquid needs to go to one of the sites above. Got a garage full of half-used cans and don't want to deal with it? We can haul it away for you.
