Junk Removal in Apopka, FL: Bulk Pickup Rules, Drop-Off Spots, and When to Hire Help

If you live in Apopka and need to get rid of an old couch, a broken fridge, or a garage full of stuff, your options depend on one thing most people never think about: whether your home is inside Apopka city limits or in unincorporated Orange County with an Apopka address. Cypress Haul Away is based right here in Apopka, and this guide covers both, plus what curbside pickup won't take and when it makes more sense to hire it out.

Am I in the City of Apopka or Unincorporated Orange County?

You can't tell from your mailing address alone, because Apopka ZIP codes cover both city homes and county homes. The quickest way to check is the Orange County Property Appraiser's property search: look up your address, open the Details tab, and check the “Municipality” and “Tax District” fields. If it says “County Tax District,” you're in unincorporated Orange County. If the search doesn't find your address, try it without the city, state, and ZIP.

Why it matters: homes inside city limits get trash service from the City of Apopka, and homes in unincorporated areas get it from Orange County. The two have their own schedules and their own rules for big items.

What Does Orange County's Curbside Large Item Pickup Take?

If you're in unincorporated Orange County, large items are picked up once a week on your garbage day (Orange County curbside collection). Here's how it works:

  • Accepted: furniture, mattresses, appliances, TVs, and up to four passenger car tires.
  • Weekly limit: up to three cubic yards per household, which the county describes as about the size of three stoves.
  • Not accepted: refrigerators, freezers, and other appliances that contain Freon. Renovation debris isn't on the county's list either, so call before you set any out.
  • Too small: anything that fits in your garbage cart goes in the cart, not out as a large item.
  • Timing: set items out no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before and no later than 6 a.m. on collection day, and keep them clear of meters and utility boxes.

Orange County changed its collection days on December 29, 2025: garbage and large items now go out on one day, and recycling and yard waste on a different day (Orange County announcement). If you haven't checked since then, look up your current days at ocfl.net/CollectionSchedule. Questions about whether a specific item qualifies go to the county's Solid Waste Hotline at (407) 836-6601.

What If I Live Inside Apopka City Limits?

City of Apopka residents are served by the city's own solid waste service, not the county program above, so the county's rules and schedule don't apply to you. Check the City of Apopka's website at apopka.net or call City Hall for the current bulk item rules before you drag anything to the curb, since leaving out something the city won't take can mean it sits there until you deal with it anyway.

Can I Haul It Myself?

Yes, and for some things it's worth it. Scrap metal is the big one: Apopka has two big scrap yards that pay you by weight for old appliances, metal furniture, and wiring. General junk and construction debris that curbside won't take can go to the county landfill or a transfer station, where you pay a fee by the ton. Our drop-off guide has the addresses, hours, and what each place accepts, and our pickup prep page covers the hazardous stuff (paint, chemicals, and so on) that nobody can just toss.

When Does Hiring a Hauler Make More Sense?

Hiring it out usually wins when curbside pickup won't take it, when it's too heavy to move safely, or when you need it gone before your next pickup day. That covers a lot of real situations:

  • A refrigerator or freezer the county won't pick up curbside
  • Leftover flooring, drywall, or wood from a project
  • More than one week's three-cubic-yard limit, like a full garage or a move-out
  • Anything stuck upstairs, in the back of the garage, or behind the house
  • A deadline: a closing, a lease end, a tenant turnover, or company coming

That's where Cypress Haul Away comes in. We're a locally owned Apopka company: one truck, one crew, no call center. Pricing is flat and upfront, with a $165 minimum that covers any single item, set prices for each item when there's more than one, and a free on-site estimate for full garages, storage units, and whole-house cleanouts. We do all the lifting and loading, and we serve Apopka plus 19 other Central Florida cities.

Quick Answers

Does Orange County charge for curbside large item pickup? It's part of regular curbside service for unincorporated homes, as long as the items are accepted and within the three-cubic-yard weekly limit.

Will the county take my old fridge? Not curbside. Freon-containing appliances like refrigerators and freezers are excluded from the program. A scrap yard or a hauler can take it.

Can I put renovation debris out with my large items? Probably not. The county's large item list covers furniture, mattresses, appliances, TVs, and tires, not renovation debris. Call the Solid Waste Hotline at (407) 836-6601 before you set any out.

How fast can Cypress Haul Away come out? We're open 6am to 8pm, every day. Text a photo of what needs to go and we'll get you a price.
