What Actually Happens to Your Junk After We Haul It Away

"Where does it all go?" is one of the most common questions we get, and it's a fair one. Nobody wants their old couch to just disappear into a landfill if there's a better option. Here's the real order of operations, every time we haul a load away.

Step One: Can It Be Donated?

Before anything else, we look at what's still usable. A couch with some wear but no damage, a dresser that just doesn't match the new decor, a mattress that's clean and intact: these are worth a second life more than they're worth a tipping fee. Places like Mustard Seed of Central Florida take clean, gently-used furniture and mattresses, and donating first is simply the better outcome, both for the environment and for whoever needs it next.

Step Two: Can It Be Recycled?

Next comes anything metal: appliances, wiring, motors, steel, aluminum, copper, brass. Scrap yards like Landers Recycling and CMC Recycling in Apopka pay by weight for exactly this kind of material, so a dead refrigerator or a broken washer doesn't have to end up buried in the ground. It gets weighed, sorted, and recycled into something new.

Step Three: Responsible Disposal for Everything Else

What's left after donation and recycling (general household junk, broken furniture that's beyond saving, construction debris) goes to the appropriate county facility. Orange and Seminole County both run landfill and transfer station sites for exactly this, and we take it there instead of anywhere less responsible.

Why This Order Matters

Skipping straight to "throw it all away" is faster, but it's not actually cheaper or better. A lot of what ends up in a junk pile still has real value if it's sorted properly first. Taking the extra step to donate and recycle before disposing is part of how we do the job, not an upsell.
