5 Signs It's Time for a Garage Cleanout

The garage has a way of becoming the room nobody plans for. It just slowly fills up until one day you realize you haven't actually parked a car in there in years. Here's how to tell it's time to deal with it.

1. You Can't Park in There Anymore

This is the big one. If the garage exists to store your car and it's currently storing everything except your car, that's the clearest sign there is.

2. You Don't Know What's in Half the Boxes

If you couldn't tell someone what's in a box without opening it, there's a decent chance you don't need what's in it. Storage should be for things you use or genuinely value, not a place to avoid decisions.

3. You're Holding Onto "Someday" Items

The exercise equipment you'll "get back to," the furniture from the old house you'll "use eventually," the project materials from three summers ago: someday has a way of never arriving, and in the meantime it's taking up space you could actually use today.

4. It's Becoming a Safety Hazard

Precarious stacks, blocked walkways, tripping hazards near the door: a cluttered garage isn't just inconvenient, it's an easy place to get hurt. If getting to the water heater or breaker box means climbing over things, it's past time.

5. You're Selling the House or Getting Ready to Move

Nothing forces the issue like a move. Buyers and appraisers notice a garage that functions as a second attic, and packing everything up is a lot harder when you're also deciding what's actually worth keeping.
